When it comes to creating holiday magic, no one can hold a candle to Ann Arbor creative Emily Schoen. With her love of timeless interiors and keen eye for vintage finds, Emily designs spaces that are welcoming and transportive. We took a tour of her new home—a 1930's Tudor brimming with character—and gathered tips for decorating in classic holiday style.
Get Thrifty
“Whenever possible, buy vintage,” recommends Schoen. “Thrift stores always have great silver pieces which look particularly elegant around the holidays. I snagged an old silver ice bucket and filled it with clippings from our tree and berries for some extra holiday cheer on our entry table.”

Go Heavy On The Greenery
“You can never have too much greenery,” says Schoen. “Hang a wreath over a mirror, drape garland around door openings and even try placing garland on your headboard! You can also hang greenery around your art—an idea I picked up while visiting a Ralph Lauren store last December.” For affordable tabletop centerpieces, Schoen recommends using potted herbs. “They look great, smell amazing, and make another use for something you probably already own,” says Schoen, who prefers rosemary trees and topiaries.
Lighting Is Key
“Light lots of candles,” advises Schoen. “I like to put them in clear glass vases. The glass reflects the candlelight, creating some extra sparkle!” When it comes to overhead lighting, Schoen’s steadfast rule is to use dimmer switches. “It really helps to set a cozy and relaxed mood!” When dimmers are not an option, Schoen recommends using low wattage bulbs such as nightlights or replacement holiday light bulbs for a similar effect.
Choose Festive Textiles
Hit the fabric store for festive patterns. Since it can be difficult to estimate the exact yardage you’ll need to cover your table, Schoen recommends first making a tablecloth out of a canvas painters drop cloth and then layering the holiday yardage on top. “This year I used a red buffalo check fabric draped on our entry table, and a green tartan plaid over a drop cloth on our dining table,” says Schoen. She also recommends swapping out pillow covers for more festive styles and layering faux fur throws on beds and sofas.
Cherish The Season
“I’ve realized that all you need to do is light candles, put on a good playlist (Frank Sinatra Christmas radio is my go-to this time of year!) and pour some wine!”
“Cherish the season!” Exclaims Schoen. “Keep wine stocked and invite people over. Entertaining is something I have overthought in the past, but I’ve realized that all you need to do is light candles, put on a good playlist (Frank Sinatra Christmas radio is my go-to this time of year!) and pour some wine! Cozy late nights filled with storytelling, laughing and watching movies with our friends and family are truly what makes this season so special.”
