With Trudie, Katie Armour Taylor and Megan Sommers redefine a classic American style.
Leave it to Katie Armour Taylor, whose travel and design blog Katie Considers is a touchstone for timeless taste, to accomplish the unthinkable. Along with business partner Megan Sommers, she’s lent new relevance to the ruffle and revived the patchwork quilt. In fact, the mission of Trudie, the duo’s sustainable new homewares collection, is to challenge the design assumptions of the current generation by giving a contemporary spin to classic country style. Drawing inspiration from vintage Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley, Trudie’s selection features handmade quilts, pillows, and tabletop items that are proudly pastoral, but which boast unexpected patterns and colorways, and a decidedly youthful vibe.
“Our creations are romantic and playful,” says Taylor of her all-American offerings. “They recall anything from a horse farm in Kentucky to a blue Wyoming sky to Bunny Mellon at Oak Spring.” And Mellon isn’t the only icon to serve as a Trudie muse. The line’s aesthetic is deeply informed by Gloria Vanderbilt’s riotous use of gingham and quilts in the 70s, and its name pays homage to a host of pioneering ladies. “We decided to honor all the great Gertrudes,” says Taylor. From Bell to Jekyll to Vanderbilt Whitney, rebellious ladies have infused Trudie’s spirit, and supplied it with the courage to break the rules.
Trudie was named after the trailblazing Gertrudes in history: explorer Gertrude Bell, horticulturalist Gertrude Jekyll, writer Gertrude Stein, folk artist Sister Gertrude Morgan, and sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, among others. We are inspired by their confidence, style, and zest for life.
